Dax Phillips
Dax Phillips arrived at Champions Sports Medicine for physical therapy one day after surgery to repair a right hip labral tear and joint damage in March 2025. As both a nursing student at Lawson State and the baseball team's starting pitcher, Dax needed a remedy for his injury and discomfort.
He had suddenly been unable to run for long stretches, drive comfortably or manage ordinary daily tasks. His sport for fun - golf - was out of reach entirely. He opted for surgery accompanied by physical therapy to get back to school, outdoor interests and the pitching mound.
"The day after surgery, I could only move on crutches," Dax stated, "and even that felt heavy."
He approached physical therapy the same way he approached the mound and his studies: know the goals, stay in "the zone" and show up to get it done. His physical therapist, having ample experience working with athletes, understood this mindset and pushed Dax during his post-operative care accordingly. Weeks later, a clear milestone arrived. "The biggest moment was when I stopped using crutches and could walk normally again," Phillips said. "It took a while, so when it finally happened, it felt earned."
Dax's efforts at the Shades Crest center as well as with his home program began to pay off. He was able to progress from strengthening to sport specific demands. With guidance, careful to avoid doing too much too soon, he gradually returned to pitching at Lawson State without any hip issues, his primary goal.
Kannon Robertson
Kannon Robertson throws with pinpoint accuracy; practice over the years has helped him become a competitive baseball player.
When an injury kept him from throwing well, it was a red flag, and he sought care from the clinicians at our center.
Kannon attacked his rehabilitation protocol like he does sports. Incrementally, he regained his strength and accuracy while leaving the pain behind.
"[The physical therapists] helped me get healthy," he shared.
We are so glad you made it back to the diamond, Kannon. Thanks for choosing us to help with your shoulder and throwing issues. We are proud to be a part of your rehabilitation journey.
We are in network with most major insurance carriers.
Alabama is a direct access state, which means most insurances approve physical therapy without a physician's referral. For more information about direct access, click here.
